Auto Insurance Claims

IMPORTANT: If you have been in accident please review the following information

  • STEP 1 – Stay calm and call 911 if anyone is injured or if you believe alcohol or criminal activity was involved.
    • If it’s safe to move your cars, remove them from the road, exchange information and report to the Collision Reporting Centre within 24 hours. Unless you’re injured, don’t leave the scene of an accident until you’ve exchanged information.
    • The dispatch operator determines if police officers are required at the scene. For a complete list of when a police officer will attend the scene, see the section entitled “Will the Police Attend the Scene to Investigate?” below. In Ontario, if you’ve been involved in a minor collision with a total combined value of $2000 in damage, you will be directed to attend at a CRC.
    • Collect the following information: name, address, phone number, driver’s license number, insurance info, number of passengers, and year, make, model, colour, and license plate number of all vehicles involved. If the driver of the other car isn’t the owner of the vehicle, get the owner info as well. Get the names and contact info of any witnesses.
  • STEP 2 – Attend the Collision Reporting Center.
    • If directed to a CRC, you must report forthwith as stated in the Highway Traffic Act. In most jurisdictions you will have up to 24 hours to report. If the collision reporting center is closed weekends (see Locations for individual hours of operation), you may be given up to 48 hours to report. Disabled vehicles must be towed directly to the CRC during business hours.
    • The driver must report at the CRC in the jurisdiction the collision occurred with:
      • Vehicle Ownership
      • Proof of Insurance
      • Driver’s Licence
      • Information Exchanged and Witness Information
  • STEP 3 – Report the Collision.
    • Once at the CRC, our professional and courteous staff will assist you through the reporting process. You will be requested to provide information related to your vehicle, driver’s license, vehicle ownership, and insurance. Once complete, the report will be printed and provided to you to write your statement, complete a diagram and sign the report.
  • STEP 4 – Vehicles Photographed.
    • All vehicles are photographed documenting the collision details and helping to reduce fraudulent claims. A “Damage Reported to Police” sticker is applied to deter additional damage from being added to the vehicles.
  • STEP 5 – Broker or Insurance Company Notified
    • If you elect to report to your insurance company, the information is made available to them through the Collision Reporting Centre. This helps speed up the claim process. Telephones are available at the Collision Reporting Center for you to contact your family, your broker, or your insurance company to start your claim.
